Cheap Eats 2011-2012: Year-End Recap

In a phrase: So near and yet so far.

In the 10 months leading up to June 2012, I had eaten at 97 of the 100 restaurants on Washingtonian’s Cheap Eats list.  I thought I had another month to go (the 2012 list came out in the August issue), but, alas, no: the 2012 list came out in the June issue. So, for 2012-2013 I have to start with the new list, grandfathering in restaurants still on the list that were previously visited.  (If you’re gonna make up your own rules, they might as well give a little home-town advantage.)  I’m taking a short break, but will be back — and swear to complete the 2012-2013 list by the time Cheap Eats 2013 comes out.

I’ve confirmed that I do have some standards for what I will put up with, service- and atmosphere-wise, to get good and cheap food. And I’ve also found that my assessment of good and cheap food might not be 100% in agreement with that of the Washingtonian food writers who compile the list.
